“Feeling a sense of belonging is a powerful factor in a student’s success at WVU.”

As an adviser within the Chambers College, Amy Roberts-Dixon has a varied caseload.  She advises incoming freshmen through seniors as well as transfer students and fully online General Business majors.  But although this range of students may seem daunting, Amy loves the opportunity to meet and connect with her students during freshman year and watch them grow to maturity all the way through to graduation.

Amy credits her advising approach to her own experience as an undergraduate student.  “I had the most amazing academic adviser, Carolyn Morris,” Amy says. “She wasn’t just knowledgeable; she was a deeply caring and supportive mentor who offered me continuous encouragement.  She inspired me to be that same kind of important figure for my own future students.”  Amy’s experiences are the foundation of her own interactions with Chambers students.  Her advising style is much appreciated by her colleagues.  Director Whitney Coup says, “Amy is a true student advocate, especially for our non-traditional Online General Business students.  The students come to us from all walks of life, and Amy treats them with empathy and care, helping them complete a sometimes very long and winding academic journey.”

Amy also goes beyond the advising appointment to encourage her students in other ways, particularly using her BCOR 191 First Year Seminar course to catch their attention.  Her methods are valuable to her whole team.  Whitney notes, “With her background and years of experience in Higher Education, I look to her as a role model for my entire staff, especially those new to the advising role.”

Amy encourages her students to immerse themselves in campus life – “anything they can do to become part of the Morgantown community.”  Student surveys indicate that finding their fit at WVU is the number one predictor of whether a student may stay here. Or, as Amy goes on to note, “Feeling a sense of belonging is a powerful factor in a student’s success at WVU.”  Many thanks to Amy for helping students find that belonging, whether they are first-time freshmen, asynchronous online students, transfers or seniors in their final semester!
