Academic and Advising Updates

Faculty in gateway/pre-requisite courses received messaging that 12-week alerts were due on November 19. Faculty have begun issuing alerts in Navigate for students who cannot pass their class.  

Effective Fall 2025, MDS 270: Effective Public Speaking will be moving to the Department of Communication Studies and will be renamed COMM 270: Effective Public Speaking. This course will be meet twice a week in a face-to-face modality: 1 75-minute large lecture for all students and 1 75-minute lab period with 20-22 students where students will present their speeches. 

Professional conferences are a great way to network, discover new ideas, meet new colleagues, and learn new techniques to enhance the work we do. The NACADA annual conference is happening October 27-October 30, and 26 advisers across the Morgantown and Beckley campuses are attending. WVU advisers are not only attending the conference, though – we are also contributing. Here are some quick WVU highlights from the conference:

Effective Fall 2024, students on an approved Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) appeal who wish to enroll in a Winter Intersession course will have the opportunity to do so, provided they meet a few additional requirements. There are no exceptions to the following requirements:

Now that student midterm grades are released, advisers have several important touchpoints available for advising appointments. Here are some ways to utilize midterm grades for effective advising appointments:

The course attempt appeal form will be available on the website starting 10/7 to coincide with availability of midterm grades. As a reminder, students who have attempted certain courses twice and have not received a passing grade must appeal to have a third attempt at the course.

As students begin to plan for spring classes, advisers are reminded that the following languages still offer available minors in: Spanish, French, Chinese Studies and Arabic Studies.  

Last year, we made significant changes to the admission process for the 2024 Summer BOOST program. We’re pleased to report that student feedback has been mostly positive.

As students begin to seek mid-semester courses, advisers should note additional seating in second 8-week courses will become available incrementally over the next four weeks.
