Academic and Advising Updates

Students in danger of losing institutional scholarships are being contacted by Student Financial Services to go to their adviser and/or add a mid-semester course.  

The Summer BOOST Program is designed to give students the opportunity to improve their academic standing by taking summer courses at WVU and providing incentives for academic success.

Early Alerts connect struggling students to their faculty and campus resources early in the semester.  Faculty who are concerned about a student's performance in their class issue an alert through Navigate.  Once the alert is issued, students will receive an automated email encouraging them to visit their instructor's office hours and/or connect to other campus resources. Advisers can see the alert under the Reports/Notes tab and then under Alerts Section. We have asked faculty to use the following reason for their alert: See instructor to discuss progression in this course. The deadline to submit the alert is February 7th. REACH Student Success will follow up with students that receive an alert via two-way texting.

Members of NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising recently received an invitation to participate in elections for the Region 3 Steering Committee. For the first time in our state’s history, West Virginia has three candidates running for critical leadership positions in the region. The nominees include: 

West Virginia residents or graduates of West Virginia institutions of higher education are eligible to apply for the Hazel Ruby Mcquain Graduate Scholarship.

New Upper Division Courses!

Faculty in gateway/pre-requisite courses received messaging that 12-week alerts were due by November 19. Faculty have begun issuing alerts in Navigate for students who cannot pass their course.  

Effective Fall 2025, MDS 270: Effective Public Speaking will be moving to the Department of Communication Studies and will be renamed COMM 270: Effective Public Speaking. This course will be meet twice a week in a face-to-face modality: 1 75-minute large lecture for all students and 1 75-minute lab period with 20-22 students where students will present their speeches. 

Professional conferences are a great way to network, discover new ideas, meet new colleagues, and learn new techniques to enhance the work we do. The NACADA annual conference is happening October 27-October 30, and 26 advisers across the Morgantown and Beckley campuses are attending.
