Academic and Advising Updates

Over the past three semesters, the Davis College Success Center and Adventure WV have collaborated to offer an Academic Mindset course (ANRD 293C: Grow Your Mindset) for students navigating the challenges of academic probation. Instead of following a more traditional instructional path with homework or out-of-class assignments, the course instead focuses on in-class discussions, activities, and success coaching sessions with the intent of helping students build resilience, self-efficacy, and goal-setting skills.

If you have seen some new faces on campus or Zoom this semester, you’ve probably seen one of our new advisers. The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) identifies new advisers as people who are under three years in the role. Here at WVU, about 15% of our advisers are less than one year in the role. “Some of our turnover is due to growth in professional advising,” Joy Carr, Director of University Advising at WVU states. “Sometimes people move on to different careers or move out of state. Our turnover is consistent with turnover nationwide.”

As recently announced, a revised and refreshed Class Registration page in the IT Help Center has been developed to support students, advisers and staff involved in the registration process.

Survey Opens: Friday, March 14

Students who have attempted certain courses twice and not received a passing grade must appeal to have a third attempt at the course.

Students in danger of losing institutional scholarships are being contacted by Student Financial Services to go to their adviser and/or add a mid-semester course.  

The Summer BOOST Program is designed to give students the opportunity to improve their academic standing by taking summer courses at WVU and providing incentives for academic success.

Early Alerts connect struggling students to their faculty and campus resources early in the semester.  Faculty who are concerned about a student's performance in their class issue an alert through Navigate.  Once the alert is issued, students will receive an automated email encouraging them to visit their instructor's office hours and/or connect to other campus resources. Advisers can see the alert under the Reports/Notes tab and then under Alerts Section. We have asked faculty to use the following reason for their alert: See instructor to discuss progression in this course. The deadline to submit the alert is February 7th. REACH Student Success will follow up with students that receive an alert via two-way texting.

Members of NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising recently received an invitation to participate in elections for the Region 3 Steering Committee. For the first time in our state’s history, West Virginia has three candidates running for critical leadership positions in the region. The nominees include: 

West Virginia residents or graduates of West Virginia institutions of higher education are eligible to apply for the Hazel Ruby Mcquain Graduate Scholarship.
