Nettie Freshour
Nettie is a Faculty Academic Adviser in Human Nutrition and Foods within the Davis College. She advises both undergraduate and graduate students as a Teaching Associate Professor and Director of the graduate Dietetic internship. She likens the work she did almost 20 years ago as a dietician with the intention of helping people to the work she gets to do now with students.
Nettie says, “I love when students come to tell me the ‘little things’, for example: getting an A on a chemistry test, getting the job they applied for, getting into the graduate school of their dreams, their new puppy or the engagement ring they got over the weekend. When students share with me aspects of their life outside of the classroom, I feel that I achieved one of the goals I set for our time together and that is to show them that I care about them as a person, and I believe in them.”
Colleague Kelli George noticed Nettie’s student-centered approach as part of her nomination.
“It’s clear that she makes students feel comfortable and cared for. I nominated Nettie because she is the best co-adviser I could ask for.”
Nettie’s best advice for students is to take time for themselves and to do what they enjoy.
“You are on your own path, so never think that you are ‘behind.’”
