“Advising gives me the chance to carry forward that legacy while directly supporting students in making the most of their WVU experience.”
As a third-generation Mountaineer, Sarah Deem takes great pride in representing West Virginia University. “Serving at a land-grant institution that has given so much to my family and to the state of West Virginia is incredibly meaningful,” Sarah notes. “Advising gives me the chance to carry forward that legacy while directly supporting students in making the most of their WVU experience.”
Sarah is a senior academic adviser in the School of Medicine and advises students in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Exercise Physiology, Health Informatics and Information Management, Immunology and Medical Microbiology, and Respiratory Therapy. “I enjoy being a resource for students as they navigate challenges, discover their interests, find themselves, and plan for their futures,” Sarah says.
Her students appreciate her role as well. Colleague Marilyn Munzer recently reviewed School of Medicine students’ answers to the question of “What would you share with prospective students about your experience at WVU, and particularly the School of Medicine?” Students directly named Sarah as a critical part of their experience. “Whenever I need help or information, Sarah Deem has always made time to meet with me and discuss,” one student noted. Marilyn followed up, “Students trust her and ask for her opinions on their options. In her advising practices, she is attentive to students needs and timelines.”
While Sarah has just completed her first full year as a professional adviser, her colleagues note how she has already contributing to the field. She recently stepped up to co-chair the New Adviser Network and recently presented at the 3rd annual West Virginia State Academic Advising Conference with fellow co-chair Stephanie Dykas. Marilyn Munzer noted, “Sarah is always there to lend support and provide solutions and ideas. She does an excellent job engaging with the students and really getting them talking and excited. I felt I learned a lot about how I can be more interactive with students daily.”
For those starting out in the profession, Sarah offers this advice: “Approach each student with patience, empathy, and an open mind. Every student’s journey is different, and taking the time to really listen and understand their individual goals and challenges makes all the difference. It’s also important to continuously learn about the resources, opportunities, and support systems available so you can guide students effectively and with confidence. Finally, remember that advising isn’t just about helping students select courses—it’s about empowering them to succeed both academically and personally, and building the trust that allows them to see you as a reliable partner in their journey.”
In the future, Sarah aspires to become a professor in the field of Aquatic Therapy. Sarah credits advising as a way to help her gain valuable experience and work toward her own future goals. “I see this position as both a way to contribute to student development now and a steppingstone toward my future in academia where I hope to continue mentoring and inspiring students in both the classroom and the clinical setting.”
