Professional development for advisers is an important way to set expectations for our knowledge growth and job performance as well as to create a common set of experiences for students, no matter what their major.
At WVU, advisers in all units are encouraged to participate in professional development throughout the year to grow, offer feedback and network. Our professional development opportunities meet one or more NACADA core competencies for advising. The major core competencies are highlighted with each event.

STEM Updates
January 17, 2024
10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Virtual
This virtual meeting will cover the coming changes in STEM progression, changes to prerequisites, and admission criteria to STEM courses. Changes will go into effect Fall 2024. A recording will be available after the presentation, but all advisers are encouraged to attend so they may begin assisting current students and preparing for NSO as soon as possible.
Academic Policy Updates
February 14, 2024

This virtual meeting will provide important updates on course attempt appeals, prior graded attempts at a course and a discussion by Lou Slimak of upcoming GEF changes and timeline. This meeting will be reHicorded, but advisers are encouraged to attend and provide valuable and timely feedback input about the GEF.

This webinar watch party and talkback will be in-person on the Morgantown campus in the Rhododendron Room of the Mountainlair. Since 2018, WVU has launched a survey on advising satisfaction. Students’ ability to identify resources available to them has been the lowest positive response on every survey. This professional development opportunity is also open to advising-adjacent colleagues (student success coaches, instructors, student life etc.).
