Key Changes in Multidisciplinary Studies Programs (BIS, MDS, RBA degrees)

|

Advisers have long relied on a variety of Multidisciplinary programs to help students achieve degree completion or find their best fit academically at WVU.

Note the basic program requirements along with some exciting changes to these programs.

Multidisciplinary Studies major (1496/14C1) in the Eberly College of Arts & Sciences

Program Requirements

The Multidisciplinary Studies (MDS) major admits freshmen and transfer students directly. Students can complete the degree in either a traditional or entirely online format. MDS is a self-designed degree allowing students to explore interests not covered by existing degree plans.

Key Changes

Starting in the Fall 2024, the Multidisciplinary Studies major (1496/14C1) in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences will require 12 credit hours of MDS courses plus any three WVU minors. Previously, students earned 5 credit hours of MDS courses.

Starting in the Fall 2024, Multidisciplinary Studies is also available as a minor (15 credit hours) in which students learn how to conduct multidisciplinary research and lead multidisciplinary teams.

Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS)

Program Requirements

The Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS) offers a fast track to degree completion. The major admits students who are at least two years out of high school. Students can qualify for F forgiveness with all prior Fs removed from their grade calculation. F forgiveness only applies as long as students are in the major. If students change majors afterwards, the Fs return to their grade calculation.

Both BIS and RBA also offer credit for prior learning opportunities, where students can receive some credit for prior work experience and training.

Regents Bachelor of Arts (RBA)

Program Requirements

Regents Bachelor of Arts (RBA) major admits students who are at least three years out of high school. RBA is an online degree. Students can qualify for F forgiveness with all Fs received four years or more prior to admission. Fs will be removed from the grade calculation as long as students remain in the major.  RBA can also be a fast track to degree completion, especially if students need to move from traditional to entirely online course delivery.

Both BIS and RBA also offer credit for prior learning opportunities, where students can receive some credit for prior work experience and training.

Key Changes

Starting in the Spring 2024, students can be admitted to RBA as soon as three years after high school.  Previously, students were required to wait for admission until they were four years out of high school.
